It's time to paint! Should you hire a pro?

Just like any home improvement project, a major paint job is an undertaking you might feel more comfortable leaving to the experts. Yes, it will cost you much more than the price of paint, but you can rest easy knowing that the job will be done right and on a timely schedule. 

Even if you have painted before, there is a definite technique to the task that only a professional will have mastered. Hiring a pro will make your life easier. No need to run to the hardware store three times for supplies, no taping for hours on end and no hassle of figuring out how you're going to reach the top corners of your two-storey great room. 

Once you've decided to hire a professional, there are a few things you should do to make sure you've found the best person for the job. First of all, only hire a painter that has been referred to you by someone who has used their services and was satisfied with the results. If not possible, ask to see samples of their work or testimonials from previous customers. A qualified professional should be able to provide these.  

Next, have a consultation prior to the project starting so that you can ensure you understand what is expected of you and what is expected of the painter. Here are some of the questions you should ask during the consultation: 

- What type of paint do they use?

- How many coats of paint are included in the quote?

- How long will it take?

- Does this price include all prep work and clean up?

- Does the price include trim or mouldings?

When you are satisfied, be sure to go over all costs and have the agreed-upon fees outlined in a contract. The contract should include a description of the work to be done, the fees, the work schedule and the payment schedule.

Finally, get at least three quotes. Choose someone that you trust and don't just go with the lowest price you can find.
