Keeping your home fresh in the cooler months

In Canada, when it comes to the seasons changing, it seems as though we go from zero to 60, without time to enjoy the transition. With the cooler temperatures now upon us we will likely begin closing all of the windows and doors to keep out the cold which can lead to a stuffy home. Here’s what you can do to keep your home fresh throughout the winter.

Reduce dryness

Humidifiers add moisture to the air and are a great addition to your home throughout the winter. Not only are they known to soothe dry skin, it’s also been shown that they help those who experience frequent coughs, sinus headaches, asthma and even snoring. They also help houseplants thrive, increase the lifespan of wood furniture and can even make the house feel warmer. Try placing a humidifier in commonly used spaces such as bedrooms and family rooms. 

Let fresh air in

This may seem like a silly tip for the winter but it’s a good idea to let five minutes of fresh air in the house every day. Having the windows closed traps pollutants into the home, which can come from furnishings, air fresheners, cleaning products, and more. By opening your window for five minutes per day you will decrease the pollutant concentration in your home helping you and your family breathe fresh air.

Keep it clean

Keeping your home clean and tidy will eliminate the amount of dust that is getting trapped. Opt for more natural cleaners such as vinegar and baking soda for even more freshness. By keeping things clean your air quality will be much better throughout the colder months.

Keep coats and boots dry

It’s easy to kick off the boots and throw your wet jackets in a pile, especially when the kids come home from school, but it’s important to keep jackets and boots dry. Instead of leaving wet winter accessories in a pile or shoving them into the closet, give them a chance to dry and air out before storing them away. Hang them on open hooks or even throw them in the dryer for a few minutes. If these items don't have a chance to dry their musty smell can hover in your home.
