Change is constant in a growing child's life. From shoe sizes to entertainment preferences they are like chameleons. It's enough to keep up with all of that so why add bedroom redecorating to your already busy chore list?
Here are a few tips to create a kids room that will grow with them right through to when they are ready to fly the coop.
Ditch the kitsch from babyhood on and forget theme rooms and cutesy plastic or particleboard furniture, opting instead for timeless pieces that are multi-purpose and built well so that they can stand up to rough and tumble play over the long haul. Think of your initial outlay as an investment when it comes to furniture.
Skip the diaper changing table for a solid, waist-high dresser that can accommodate a changing station. Place a rubber stopper pad like the kind used under carpets, to keep it from slipping.
Start with a sturdy bed that will see the pint-sized grade schooler right through their tall teenager years.
Same goes for a chaise lounge or arm chair with an ottoman. They'll keep you comfortable through late night feedings and become a reading spot or hang-out zone for visitors in later years.
Storage in a wide array from bookshelves to baskets and wooden boxes will give treasures and necessities a suitable home through all ages. But beware, too much storage may make a pack rat out of your offspring.
As for the walls, avoid theme rooms at all costs. They are often passing fads and giving into them will mean repainting every other year. Go for bold colours on one wall with muted complementary colours on the rest and posters or framed favourite pieces of home-made artworks to decorate. Consider painting one wall, or part of one, with chalkboard paint and let their fingers fly with designs from scribbles to graffiti from age two to 18.
Window treatments should be simple. Tasteful blinds and curtains serve a practical purpose and it's likely best to keep the style contemporary and the colours solid.
For the floor carpet tiles are a smart move. If spills land on them they're easy to replace.
